ABSTRACT

How can the technique of scenography be used to produce intimate interiors for people who lack physical contact?

Nowadays, there are many people (families, friends, lovers) who need to live apart due to the social concern of work, study and special global circumstances like quarantine. Geographical distances create barriers and limit physical contact. We desire to establish a close connection with others. Intimate Space: Parallel existence of untouchable humans aims to show the possibility of how the power of interior design can lessen the psychological distance and enhance intimacy through techniques of scenography.

Scenography is mostly used in the context of stage design, which emphasises the atmosphere of scenic spaces. The approach of scenography plays a significant role to create spaces with intimate atmospheres that people can actively interact with. In this project, the role of participant shifts between the performer and the audience. The stage is presented digitally and keeps changing by time and daily routines.

Through the technique of scenography, the project is exploring the notion of intimacy in the context of interior design. The scenographic explorations focus on a series of sensory experiences such as digital visualisation (the integration of reality and virtually) and physical touch (body gestures) by intervention, diagrams and model making. I proposed residential spaces in multiple countries. The project will show how architecture can be an actual screen for digital space, shifting the communication from a 2D screen to spatial context to establish intimate closeness.

For the major project in semester 2, the ideas of intimate space in relation to scenography were shifted into the context of educational institutions such as kindergarten, high school, university. The discussion will move forward with education in the future and investigate how to enhance experience and student connections with people in other educational institutions all over the world.
